Turning "'fro into beau" pays dividends for Wellington inventor
23 June 2008
A unique hair care product proven to tame even the most unruly hair is proving a windfall for a Wellington entrepreneur.
The Wondercap, created by Eastbourne-based inventor Gail McJorrow, recently tipped the $100,000 sales mark and is set to grow substantially over the coming six months.
Having recently graduated from Grow Wellington’s Activate business incubation programme, Ms McJorrow plans to extend the Wondercap’s market share nationwide and enter the Australian market.
“The Wondercap has proved itself in the marketplace. In just 18 months Wondercap has gone from selling one product a week through online sales to turning over more than $100,000 a year. It now has a presence in top retail shops Rodney Wayne, Life Pharmacy and Kirkcaldie and Stains and sales continue to grow,” says Ms McJorrow.
“The next stage for the Wondercap is to take the business further. On the back of the Activate programme, ongoing business development and marketing, the company is now in a position to expand – both nationally and also across the Tasman.
“The Activate programme and its associated networks have really opened doors for me and the Wondercap business and it’s now time to capitalise on this – starting with launching our new brand and expanding market share. We have some excellent channels here in New Zealand and are looking to co-brand with a high profile Australian hair product brand.”
The patented Wondercap combines a unique heated wheat bag, terry towel cap and intensive conditioning treatment to provide a unique home hair treatment. It has proven popular with consumers seeking an alternative to expensive salon treatments and hair products.
“With increasing prices across consumer products, many New Zealanders are tightening their belts. Wondercap is a fully washable, reusable product that allows New Zealanders to have a luxurious beauty treatment every week without the high price tag attached with going to a salon,” says Ms McJorrow.
