Buzzing on knowledge

It’s been a while since my last blog – but there’s a very good reason. I have become an athlete. Countless hours of watching the Olympic Games have reawakened the competitor in me.In which sport, you ask – swimming, athletics, synchronised diving? Actually none of the above – my sport du jour is Playstation 3’s Buzz! Okay, so you could argue I’m more of a ‘Mathlete’ than ‘Athlete’ – but nonetheless, a very competitive one at that.It started off as a bit of harmless fun – having picked up the game in a recent trip to EB Games, my husband and I sat down for an evening of trivia frivolity. I picked a gorgeous-looking avatar (closely resembling Madonna circa 1985) and with that, the game began.Questions bombarded us on all matter of subjects including science and technology, the natural world, people and events, television, movies and music. Gratifyingly, I knew the answers to most. More importantly, I had the speed to buzz first (leaving my husband’s ‘Flash’ avatar with pie on its face – literally – on more than one occasion). My only weakness was a funny category by the name of ‘sport’ (who’d have thought it).Six games in and I was proving to be a tough competitor – but of course, there can only be one winner. One gold medallist. Alas, it was not to be me. I (rather ungraciously) accepted the silver medal while my husband went away with the gold.Aside from second place, I came away from our game with was an extended knowledge base. With more than 5000 questions built in to Buzz!, we made it through around 2% of the game.As someone who spends a considerable amount of time reading, researching and poring through news reports – I was pleasantly find how much information I gathered from this Playstation game. I now have a newfound appreciation for architectural history, for biology, for technology ... and yes, for sports. I have to say I’m looking forward to the next “Rose Buzz! Olympics” and increasing my knowledge further.
